Once every other month, Elam members join together to assemble home cooked meals to be distributed through Caring for Friends. Meals are frozen, delivered to isolated and homebound persons in the five-county Greater Philadelphia region by Caring for Friends volunteers. Other local groups and individuals also make meals which are brought to Elam for distribution. Packing materials with instructions are always available at Elam for anyone willing to help.
Caring for Friends has been in continuous operation since 1974 and currently serve over 166 individuals 7 dinners per week. In addition, soups and breakfast items are offered when available. Meals and outreach services are provided free of charge, enabling those served to conserve their limited incomes for their other necessities and living expenses. They do not impose any time limits on their services to friends, nor is there an age requirement for the program. Most of the clients are elderly, however, and about 25% of those served are individual under 60 who are homebound due to disabilities.
